Matzenauer Receives First Big Ten Athlete Of The Week Award

EVANSTON, Ill. -- After notching two singles and two doubles wins in dual play last week, Northwestern sophomore Suzie Matzenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) has been honored with her first Big Ten Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week award. The Wildcats, who remain No.1-ranked in this week's latest poll, have garnered five-of-nine Big Ten awards presented this season.
At No. 6 singles, Matzenauer went 2-0 last weekend posting wins against Wisconsin and Harvard. She rolled to a convincing victory in both matches, recording a 6-2, 6-1 win versus Morgan Tuttle of Wisconsin and a 6-0, 6-1 win over Margarita Krivitski of Harvard. Matzenauer has won 21-consecutive dual singles at No. 6 and currently stands at 14-0 in dual play this season.
Matzenauer and Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) won both No. 2 doubles matches over the weekend 8-2, 8-0 respectively. With all games combined, Matzenauer scored an impressive 40-6 overall.
As a team, Northwestern is 13-1 on the season (3-0 Big Ten) and remain as the top-ranked team according to this week's ITA rankings. The 'Cats have won seven-consecutive dual matches.
The Wildcats have received the Big Ten weekly honor on five occasions this year, with Matzenauer becoming the fourth 'Cat to collect the award. Maria Mosolova (2), Samantha Murray and Georgia Rose have previously been recognized this season.
Northwestern is off until March 25, when they will travel to Austin, Texas to take-on the 18th-ranked Texas Longhorns.
