EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following her victory over third-ranked Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech in the Wildcats' 6-1 win over the defending NCAA champions, ninth-ranked Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) has been named the Big Ten's Player of the Week. NU has captured all but one of the weekly awards handed out by the conference this season.
Rose defeated the third-ranked McDowell in three sets Saturday to put No. 7 Northwestern ahead for good in its 6-1 win over No. 1 Georgia Tech. With the team score tied, 1-1, the ninth-ranked Rose dominated the last two sets to take her match at No. 2 singles.
She surrendered only three games to help the Wildcats defeat the defending national champions. Rose is undefeated in dual play and boasts a 19-4 record on the season.
As a team, the Wildcats are now 3-0 on the season and have put up a combined dual score of 20-1. This is Rose's fifth career weekly honor, and her first of 2008. Rose was the 2007 Big Ten Player of the Year.
Maria Mosolova and Samantha Murray have also earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors this season.
