EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Emily Wong (Nepean, Ont./St. Joseph's) of the women's swimming team and freshman Jason Welch (Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) of the wrestling team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their efforts over the weekend.
Wong won both the 50 (24.06) and 100 (52.12) sprint freestyle races during Northwestern's holiday training trip meet in Boca Raton, Fla. on Saturday. Wong also teamed with Shelby Johnson, Teisha Lightbourne and Kassia Shishkoff to win the 200 free relay (1:35.81) as Northwestern earned team victories against Florida Atlantic, Old Dominion and Oregon State.
Welch played a huge role in NU's dual match wins over the weekend against No. 24 Pittsburgh and Clarion. At Pitt, 16th-ranked Welch managed to stretch his late lead against Phil Sorrentino to eight to earn major decision points as NU edged the Panthers, 20-18. Against Clarion, Welch improved to 6-0 in dual competition with a hard-fought 6-5 win against No. 17 Hadley Harrison.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is C.J. Bachér (Sacramento, Calif./Jesuit) of the football team. Bacher and other student-athletes from the football team, as well as the Northwestern Gridiron Network, collected new toys and coats for Family Focus of Evanston at their Bowling with the 'Cats event held Tuesday, Dec. 16 at Pinstripes. Those who attended braved the winter weather to donate toys and coats to those in the Evanston community who need them the most.
