'Cats Fall To Hoosiers, 81-57

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman Maggie Mocchi (Wheeling, Ill./Buffalo Grove) scored a career-high 18 points and Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) notched her sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 boards but Indiana bested Northwestern, 81-57, Saturday afternoon in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Meshia Reed (Country Club Hills, Ill./Stockbridge, (Ga.)) added 10 points.
Northwestern held a slight advantage in the early going before back-to-back Indiana treys within 15 seconds of each other boosted the home team a 19-12 lead with 10:33 on the clock.
The Wildcats kept Indiana's lead to single-digits until the 3:20 mark when a bucket by Kim Roberson pushed IU's lead to 34-23.
A three-pointer by Mocchi with just under 30 seconds remaining pulled the 'Cats to within 10, 36-26. A layup by Whitney Thomas gave the Hoosiers a 38-26 advantage at the break.
Jaeschke led NU with seven points, seven rebounds and three assists at intermission.
A trey by Mocchi and a bucket by Reed out of half pulled the score to 38-31 in the early minutes of the second half. Indiana built the lead back up to 11 until two free-throws by Meshia Reed pulled NU to within ten, 49-39. Two more free throws by Brittany Orban (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) and a bucket by Jaeschke over the next two minutes cut IU's lead to six, 51-45, with just under 12 minutes left.
Indiana built the lead back up to 10 at the 10:06 mark, but a jumper by Reed and a layup by Mocchi once again cut the Hoosier lead to six with 9:11 remaining.
IU's Thomas nailed two free throws and used a bucket off a steal to give the Hoosiers a 60-47 lead with 8:12 remaining. Indiana outscored NU 17-10 the rest of the way to seal its first conference win of the season.
Mocchi went 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and pulled down five rebounds. Jaeschke finished with a team-high four assists and five blocks to compliment her 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats return to the court on Monday when they face North Dakota in a 1 p.m. contest at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Following six days off for the holidays, Northwestern travels to Ann Arbor for a 1 p.m. CT contest with the Wolverines on Sunday, Dec. 28.
