Wildcats Fall in Three Sets to Ohio State in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern's hopes for a weekend Big Ten split came up short as Ohio State handed the Wildcats a 3-0 defeat (21-25, 20-25, 17-25) at St. John Arena Saturday evening. The victory gives the Buckeyes the season sweep as they improve to 11-15 on the season and 2-12 in Big Ten play, while NU falls to 8-17 on the year are tied with OSU at 2-12 in the conference.
Both teams traded points through the majority of the opening set, with Ohio State building a three-point cushion at 19-16. The Buckeyes would push that advantage to five at 22-17 before taking the opening stanza at 25-21. Senior Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) spearheaded the `Cat offense, killing six balls on eight attacks with junior Ariel Baxterbeck (Menlo Park, Calif./Castilleja) adding four kills of her own. Sophomore Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) dished out 12 assists and added four digs as well for NU.
The Buckeyes continued that momentum into the second set, building an early 8-3 advantage. Ohio State pushed that lead to seven at 21-14, then held on for the 25-20 victory to take a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chapparal) registered five kills for Northwestern while sophomore Naomi Johnson (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) complimented the attack with four of her own. Glab added 14 assists to her total as well.
Set three was more of the same as Ohio State jumped out to an 11-5 lead and never looked back. The Buckeyes pushed that lead to as many as 10 at 21-11 before cruising to the 25-17 victory. Katie Dull had a huge game for the Buckeyes, tallying 18 kills and adding a pair of blocks.
Johnson and Hyser each finished with nine kills apiece for the Wildcats, with Moffett adding eight kills and a pair of blocks. Glab completed the match with 34 of NU's 37 assists and had six digs, tied for the team lead with junior Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg). Baxterbeck also added seven kills and five digs for the `Cats.
Northwestern returns to Welsh-Ryan Arena for a pair of conference games, beginning with the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday, Nov. 14. The Wildcats then host 18th-ranked Minnesota on Saturday, Nov. 15. Both matches get underway at 7 p.m.
