EVANSTON, Ill, -- Sophomore Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) mustered her third double-double this season, contributing 18 points and 10 rebounds and Northwestern shot nearly 45 percent from the field, but it was not enough as Missouri surged in the final minutes to pull off a 69-63 victory Sunday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Kristin Cartwright (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) nearly finished with a double-double of her own, putting up 16 points and nine boards in the effort.
It was a game of spurts, and Missouri sprinted out of the gates early, knocking down four of its first six shots from the field in the opening five minutes to take an early 11-5 advantage.
A bucket from Cartwright and a trey from Meshia Reed (Country Club Hills, Ill./Stockbridge (Ga.)) quickly pulled NU to within 11-10 with 14 minutes remaining. But the Tigers built their lead back up to seven with 10:17 left before Northwestern went on a 9-0 spurt to take a 24-22 lead with just over eight minutes left.
After exchanging baskets, Northwestern held on to a 36-31 lead at the break. Jaeschke led all scorers with 13 points and six rebounds at intermission.
Missouri opened the second half strong, tying the game at 37 with 18:37 left to play, but the Wildcats maintained the lead for the next 10 minutes, thanks largely to 10 points from Cartwright. The junior forward hit two free throws with just under nine minutes remaining to give NU it's largest lead of the night--11 points.
But that's when Missouri surged. The Tigers held NU's offense silent over the next six-and-a-half-minutes while orchestrating a 14-0 run to take a three-point lead with 2:11 left. A jumper from Reed with 1:51 on the clock pulled the 'Cats to within one, 62-61, but that was the closest they would come.
Reed added 14 points on 6-of-9 from the field and chipped in four rebounds.
