Northwestern Remains On Top at TYR Invitational

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 21 Northwestern continues to dominate the TYR Invitational field after a strong showing Saturday at the Norris Aquatics Center. The Wildcats broke the pool record in the 800 free relay en route to a 156-point advantage over second-place Michigan State and a 585.5-point lead over third-place Kenyon College.
The Wildcats enter the final day of the three-day meet with 1,035.5 points while the Spartans have 879.5 and Kenyon has compiled 450.
Northwestern began the finals with a victory in the 200 medley relay, getting a 1:42.95 from Katie Eschenburg (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead), Jenny Wilson (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School), Stacy Congdon (Windermere, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) and Emily Wong (Nepean, Ontario/St. Joseph's).
The Wildcats then won the top three spots during the super final of the 400 IM, with Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) swimming a 4:18.27 to win followed by Hannah Points (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) in second with a 4:19.65 and Kathleen Patterson (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) in third with a 4:26.13.
Jacquie Godbe (Rapid City, S.D./Stevens) won the consolation final of the 400 IM with a 4:29.87.
In the 100 fly, Congdon and Eschenburg represented NU in the super final, with Congdon swimming to a 54.69 first-place effort and Eschenburg nabbing third with a 56.18 swim. With five swimmers in the consolation final, Northwestern swept the top three spots in the heat. Meghan Cavanaugh (Anchorage, Alaska/East Anchorage) won with a blazing 55.79, 1.5 seconds ahead of Alex Kraus (Birmingham, Ala./Vestavia Hills) in second. Points took third in the heat with a 57.34.
Shishkoff won her second event of the evening with a 1:49.95 in the 200 free super final, while teammates Caitlin Masney (Hong Kong, China/Chinese International School) and Sheila O'Neill (Dunwoody, Ga./Marist School) took third and fourth, respectively.
Northwestern again took the top three spots in the consolation final, this time in spectacular fashion. Just .02 of a second separated the top three swimmers, and all were Wildcats. Ellen Grigg's (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) time of 1:50.98 was tops, followed by Wong's 1:50.99. Jenn Kocsis (Omaha, Neb./Marian) was third with a 1:51.00. The racing 'Cats were 2.45 seconds ahead of the nearest competition, and they pushed themselves into times that all would have placed second in the super final.
Wilson won the 100 breast for the Wildcats with a 1:03.93, besting teammate Hayley Fry (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) who had a 1:04.55 in the super final of the event. Patterson was NU's top swimmer in the consolation final with a fourth-place finish in the heat and an eighth-place ranking overall in the event.
Liza Engstrom (Reno, Nev./Robert McQueen) and Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) represented NU in the 100 back super final, with Engstrom taking second in 56.25 and Szymanski earning third with a 56.98. Eschenburg (11th overall) and Erin Reilly (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way-East) (12th overall) represented NU in the consolation final, while Godbe and Sara White-Delehoy (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) both earned points in the bonus final.
On the 3-meter diving board, Tania Lyerly (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville was NU's top finisher with a fifth-place effort and 248.62 points.
NU closed Saturday's action with a bang, shattering the pool record by in the 800 free relay by more than three full seconds. The team of Kocsis, Grigg, Wong and Shishkoff swam a 7:20.57 to win the event for NU.
The TYR Invitational concludes tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 23, with preliminary heats at 9 a.m. and finals at 3 p.m. at the Norris Aquatics Center.
