EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second straight year, Northwestern improved its team finish over the previous year, posting a 14th-place team finish in the 6K NCAA Midwest Regional Championships, just four points shy of 12th position. NU's top two runners crossed the finish nearly side-by-side, as freshman Sophie Ewald (Berlin, Germany/Droste-Huelshoff Oberschule/Barron (Wis.)) (22:16.35) and senior Carly Brown (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead) (22:16.50) came in 44th and 45th overall, respectively.
Ewald finishes her freshman campaign having paced all NU runners in five meets this year.
Senior Marcellee Fullwood (Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls) nearly joined Ewald and Brown in her last race for the Wildcats, notching a 49th-place finish in 22:21.55 to help Northwestern compile 349 total team points.
"I was extremely pleased with our overall team performance as we wrapped up our 2008 season," head coach April Likhite said. "This was the strongest finish at the regional championships we've had in several years. I was thrilled that Carly and Marcellee capped off their collegiate careers with their strongest regional finishes."
Freshman Hallie Busta (Jackson, Ohio/Massillon-Jackson) came in fourth among Wildcats and 77th overall (22:49.55), followed by classmates Rachel Edwards (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) (23:40.3), Abby Tracy (Vadnais Heights, Minn./White Bear Lake Area) (23:48.30) and Rose Plomin (Bloomfield Hills, Ind./Cathedral) (24:13.75).
"The absence of Rachel Kaminski (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) due to injury definitely affected our final outcome," Likhite said, "but the team's tremendous effort allowed us to still walk away with a better placing than last year."
Minnesota wrapped up the Midwest Regional championship with 57 points on Saturday, followed by Illinois with 64 points. Senior Rachel Marchand of Iowa claimed the individual title with a time of 20:32.05.
Northwestern's season came to a close in Stillwater but enters 2009 with a talented group of nine runners who gained valuable experience in their freshman seasons, including Busta, Edwards, Ewald and Kaminski.
