EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Maria Mosolova, ranked sixth in the nation, won the first set of her semifinal match at the ITA All American Championships in impressive fashion but lost a thrilling contest to Kelcy McKenna of Arizona State (0-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4)). Mosolova is now 6-1 in singles play through Northwestern's first two competitions of the fall schedule.
“Maria has been playing great all week and today was an especially great effort on her part,” said head coach Claire Pollard. “It's tough to lose such a close match but we are proud of how she competed in this tournament.”
Mosolova had earned a berth in the semifinals by defeating the 2008 ITA National Player of the Year Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech in three sets.
Northwestern will be in action again this weekend when it hosts the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston from Friday, Oct. 10 to Sunday, Oct. 12. Teams competing include DePaul, Illinois, LSU, Michigan St., Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Wisconsin.
