EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., this weekend to race against the conference's best at the 28th running of the Big Ten Championships at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday. Seniors Carly Brown and Marcellee Fullwood, who finished first and second for NU, respectively, in the Pre-Nationals meet, are focused on helping Northwestern reach new heights in their last conference championships.
Northwestern finished 10th as a team in 2007, April Likhite's first year in her second stint as Wildcats head coach, which was an improvement on back-to-back 11th-place finishes. In 2008, bolstered by talented freshmen Sophie Ewald, Rachel Kaminski and Rachel Edwards, NU is prepared to take the next step in its program resurgency.
Ewald has placed first among Wildcats in two meets this year and has finished as high as second overall (Mississippi State Invitational, Sept. 20).
The Big Ten features a host of the nation's top cross country programs, with seven of its 11 teams ranked among the country's top 21 in the latest USTFCCA polls. Minnesota heads the conference pack at No. 7. Northwestern has garnered a No. 12 ranking in the Midwest region.
Following the meet, Northwestern has two weeks to train for the NCAA Regionals competition on the campus of Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla.
