EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Kassia Shishkoff (Raleigh, N.C./St. David's School) of the swimming and diving team and senior Brian Usinger (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) of the men's soccer team have been named the Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Shishkoff had a strong start to the season, winning four events at No. 8 Indiana and recording two NCAA 'B' provisional qualifying standards despite much faster required times than years past. Shishkoff won the 200 free with a 'B' cut of 1:48.15 before turning in a 'B' time of 4:48.95 to capture the 500 free. She also won the 400 IM and was a member of the winning 400 free relay for the 'Cats.
Usinger helped No. 2 Northwestern stretch its unbeaten streak to 13 games to start the year with his first-half header goal against Northern Illinois. Usinger anchors an NU defense that now owns the school record for shutouts in a season with 10. He scored again on a penalty kick in NU's 3-1 defeat at the hands of No. 21 Michigan. Usinger's two goals in one week doubled his previous career scoring total.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is Sterling Williams (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young) of the men's basketball team. Sterling spoke in front of the entire student body at Oak Terrace School in Highland Park on Oct. 21 about the importance of studying hard and succeeding academically. Sterling encouraged students to participate in the Book Mark Program through which they can receive one ticket to an NU sporting event for every 10 books they read.
