EVANSTON, Ill. -- After a week off from competition, Northwestern travels to the campus of Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind., Saturday to run in the Pre-Nationals Meet. NU, ranked No. 11 in the Midwest region, is set to compete against 41 schools in the 6K Women's White Race, which is slated to begin at 11:35 a.m.
Northwestern has enjoyed success this season thanks to contributions from its veteran leaders as well as its talented freshman newcomers. Senior Carly Brown (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead) has placed first among NU runners twice in 2008 and has her sights set on breaking 21 minutes in the 6K distance. Her best 6K time came last year at the Bradley Invitational when she posted a 21:38.
Fellow senior Marcellee Fullwood (Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls) has also been a steady contributor, coming in third among Wildcat runners in the past three meets. In 2007, Fullwood posted a career-best 6K time of 22:04 at the Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill.
Also at the front of the pack for Northwestern has been freshman Sophie Ewald (Berlin, Germany/Droste-Huelshoff Oberschule/Barron (Wis.)). Ewald has improved her 5K time in each of her first four collegiate meets, recording a season-best 18:04 at the adidas Invitational on Oct. 3. Another of NU's nine freshmen, Rachel Kaminski (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port), has finished fourth or better for Northwestern in every meet this year.
Indiana State is also the site of the 2008 NCAA Championships on Nov. 24.
