ANN ARBOR, Mich. --Freshman Meshia Reed and junior Ellen Jaeschke turned in solid performances, but it was not enough as Michigan defeated the Wildcats 54-42 Sunday afternoon at Crisler Arena. Jaeschke notched her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Reed tallied a career-high 24 points and 11 rebounds, giving her the first double-dip of her career.
Northwestern held Michigan scoreless through the first three minutes of the game while jumping out in front early, 6-0.
Poor shooting in opening minutes proved to be an accurate taste of what the rest of the game had to offer as both squads shot a combined 28 percent (35-of-121) from the field on the afternoon.
Jaeschke hit one of her five first-half baskets to give NU its largest lead of the half, 14-7, with 6:42 remaining. Michigan responded with five unanswered points, courtesy of a Jessica Minnfield triple--one of her three in the half--and a bucket by Krista Phillips.
The Wolverines outscored NU 9-3 over the remaining 5:44 to pull the halftime score to 21-19 in their favor. A trey by Benson gave Michigan its first lead of the game with 2:51 remaining and Minnfield added another triple a minute later. Reed answered with a three of her own with 42 seconds remaining.
Jaeschke led NU with 10 points at the break, while Reed contributed seven points and five boards.
Reed opened the second half the same way she finished the first, knocking down a triple to give the Wildcats a 22-21 lead two minutes into the half.
Michigan held Northwestern scoreless over the next four minutes while increasing their lead to eight until a bucket by Reed at the 14:01 mark ended the Wildcats' scoring drought.
The Wolverines went on to outscore Northwestern 18-6 over the next 10 minutes to take a 20-point lead with 3:31 remaining.
Reed made the closing minute eventful, sinking seven points in the final 30 seconds to pull the score within 10 with 14 seconds remaining. Michigan hit one final basket to pull the score to 54-42.
Northwestern falls to 4-11, 0-3 on the season.
The Wildcats are next in action on Thursday, January 10 when they travel to University Park to face Penn State at 6 p.m. CT.
