EVANSTON, Ill. -- Redshirt freshman Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward) of wrestling and senior Andrea Hupman (Lawrenceville, Ga./Brookwood) of women's swimming have been named this week's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Northwestern's most dramatic win Sunday in a dual meet against No. 1 Iowa came at 141 lbs. where Sulzer upset ninth-ranked Dan LeClere, 9-3. Iowa had closed the score to 7-6 with back-to-back wins at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., but Sulzer helped NU open up a 10-6 lead.
Sulzer scored an early takedown in the first period, but the period ended at 2-2 after an Iowa reversal. Sulzer trailed 4-2 heading into the third, but he scored a takedown and near-fall to earn the win.
Hupman won both of her individual events Saturday against Ohio State with NCAA `B' provisional qualifying cuts, and anchored both of Northwestern's relay wins to help NU to a 167-133 dual-meet victory over the Buckeyes. Hupman started the meet off on a good note with a 50.94 anchor leg in the 400 medley relay, the fastest split in the pool.
She then set a season-best time with a `B' cut of 1:50.10 to win the 200 free before swimming another `B' time of 50.79 to win the 100 free. She closed out the day as the anchor on NU's winning 200 free relay.
