EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) was selected as the Big Ten women's tennis Athlete of the Week on Wednesday by the conference.
Murray excelled in the Wildcat Invitational last weekend to the tune of a 3-0 record in singles play and 5-0 in doubles. Murray won Flight B of the Invitational with nine points, three ahead of the next closest competitor. In Flight A, Murray also racked up five points, which was good for the third-highest total.
Overall on the weekend, NU demolished its singles competition, not dropping a single match. In doubles competition NU lost only twice, while racking up 18 victories.
In addition to being named the Big Ten Player of the Week, Murray was named Northwestern's Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week and is ranked 20th in singles in the initial release of the ITA Tennis rankings. The honor from the Big Ten was the third in her career. She is also the last NU women's tennis player to be named Big Ten Athlete of the Week with the honor on April 24 of last year.
The Invitational wrapped up the Wildcats' open matches. They begin dual-match play on Jan. 20 against William & Mary at the Combe Tennis Center.
