EVANSTON, Ill. -
Northwestern University Director of Athletics Mark Murphy has announced the hire of Carrie Jaworski, M.D., as the department's first full-time head team physician. In the newly created position, Jaworski will oversee physician-based medical care for the over 450 Wildcats student-athletes across 19 sport programs.
"We are very excited that Carrie has agreed to become our first full-time head team physician," Murphy said. "In recent years, we have found that it has been very difficult to meet the medical needs of our student-athletes with a part-time physician. Carrie has a great background for the position and will be a tremendous asset to our athletic program and student-athletes."
Dr. Jaworski comes to Northwestern following a six-year stint at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago where she most recently founded and served as the director of both the sports medicine center as well as the sports medicine fellowship program. She has also worked as teaching faculty in the family practice setting, a role she served in at both Resurrection Medical Center and prior to that at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Jaworski has been the medical director and head team physician at North Park University since 2002. A 1992 graduate of the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, she attended medical school at Loyola University of Chicago until earning her degree in 1996.
"When Northwestern University first approached me about this new position, I was immediately impressed by the fact that the Department of Athletics and the University were so committed to the health and well-being of their student-athletes," Jaworski said. "The ability to have a full-time physician dedicated solely to caring for student-athletes is a fairly unique situation within university athletics programs. Northwestern should take pride in the fact that they are leading the way in terms of providing medical care for their student-athletes. Other programs will undoubtedly look to us in the future as the sports medicine model they wish to emulate."
Northwestern University Assistant Athletic Director of Athletic Training Services Tory Lindley said that the addition of Jaworski to the staff will greatly benefit the Wildcat student-athletes.
"As an athletic department we are both thrilled and fortunate to have a physician with Dr. Jaworski's background join our staff," Lindley said. "As head team physician, she will be valued for her sports medicine expertise to provide direct care and oversight of care for our 450-plus student-athletes. The health and well-being of our student-athletes is in great hands."
A Chicago native, Jaworski and her husband, Jerzy, have two daughters, Grace and Sara.
