Jake Goebbert Named Big Ten Player of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. - Freshman first baseman Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) was named Big Ten Player of the Week by the conference office today. The award is the second of Goebbert's career as he was also honored on the first week of the season.
Goebbert batted an astounding .750 (12-for-16) as Northwestern swept Purdue in a four-game series over the weekend. The first-year player added eight RBI, three doubles, a triple and scored six runs in the series to accumulate a slugging percentage of 1.063. Goebbert also recorded a sacrifice fly and walked once without striking out during the weekend for an on-base average of .765, giving him an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.828. The first baseman tallied multiple hits in each game, including a 4-for-5 performance in Game 1 of the series where he drove in three runs and scored one to lead the Wildcats to a 12-3 win.
The Hampshire High School product ended the 2007 season with a .335 batting average, good enough for third best on the team. His 37 RBI trailed only Antonio Mule's 41 and Jake Owens' 39. He led the team with 14 doubles.
