ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With two rounds completed at the NCAA Central Regional Championships at the U-of-M Golf Course, Northwestern remains in 13th place in the 21-team field.
The top eight finishing teams will advance to the NCAA National Championships on May 22 in Daytona Beach, Fla. USC is the day two leader with a 9-stroke lead over TCU.
Northwestern will likely need to play its season's best round of golf to have a chance of gaining a top-eight berth on Saturday. The Wildcats, who came out strong on Friday before shaving three strokes off their opening round score, are 45-over (308-305) for the tournament and sitting 21 strokes out of eighth place.
Competing in the NCAA postseason for the seventh time in eight years, the Wildcats are seeking their first NCAA national appearance since 2000.
Sophomore Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./First Academy) and senior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) led the 'Cats in Friday's second round, both shooting 3-over 74's. Scholten, who is enjoying her best season at Northwestern, was at even-par after the first 13 holes. A double bogey on the par-3 14th and a bogey on 15 dropped her to 3-over for the round. Scholten is 68th overall with a 13-over 155 (81-74).
Hong is Northwestern's top player through two rounds with an 8-over 150 (76-74). She is in 36th place.
Senior Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) shot a 7-over 78 on Friday and is 11-over (75-78=153) for the tournament and in 59th place.
Senior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) and junior Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) finished 10-over and 8-over, respectively, for the second round. After 36 holes, Kim is 15-over (76-81=157) and in 74th place, while Johnston is 18-over (81-79=160) and sitting 86th.
The third and final round begins at 7 a.m. CT Saturday.
