EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern could not overcome a six-run second inning, falling in defeat to Iowa 14-10 Sunday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. Try as they might, the Wildcats kept clawing back, only to see Iowa score more runs in a very offensive minded weekend. Junior Jake Owens had three hits and Antonio Mule tallied three RBI as NU falls to 10-29 overall, 3-17 in the Big Ten.

Like they had done in the previous two games, Iowa came right out and scored in the first inning. A leadoff double went to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Wildcats came right back and scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to spot Wildcat starter Joe Muraski (Rothschild, Wis./D.C. Everest) a 3-1 lead. Freshman Jake Goebbert (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) laced an RBI single and left fielder Mike Kalina (Munster, Ind./Munster) tallied an RBI sacrifice fly.

Iowa then put up six runs in the top of the second inning, only two of which were earned. The Hawkeyes did have five hits in the inning, including a three run home run.

NU came right back and scored three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 7-6 in favor of Iowa. Designated hitter Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) launched his sixth home run of the season in the inning. It was a two-run shot. Third baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) recorded an RBI double in the inning.

Neither team found the scoring column until the Hawkeyes plated four runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Freshman lefty Matt Diedrich (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Carmel) came on in relief of Muraski to start the sixth inning. He gave up three run on five hits in one complete inning of work.

Sophomore Matt Havey (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola) started the seventh inning on the mound for Northwestern. He went two complete innings and did not give up a hit.

In the bottom of the eight inning, NU tried to mound a comeback but the eight run lead was insurmountable. They did however bat around in the inning and score four runs on four hits. They took advantage of two Hawkeye miscues. Mule drove in his third run of the game with a fielder's choice groundball and Goebbert hit a sacrifice fly.

In all, the two teams combined to score 24 runs on 29 hits and committed seven errors. Twelve of those hits went for extra bases, three home runs and nine doubles.

NU is next in action when they take on Northern Illinois at Rocky Miller Park this Tuesday at 3 p.m.
