LANSING, Mich. -- No. 33 Northwestern shot the third-best score for the third round on Saturday to maintain its third-place standing with one round remaining at the Big Ten Championships.
The Wildcats' team score of 13-over 301 for round three was their best round at the Big Ten Championships so far. Unfortunately for the 'Cats, the two teams in front of them on the leaderboard were the two teams that posted lower scores on Saturday.
With one round remaining, Northwestern's 54-hole total of 57-over 921 (313-307-301) puts it eight shots behind second-place Purdue and three shots ahead of fourth-place Ohio State. Host Michigan State leads the tournament at 26-over 890.
Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) began the day in a tie for fourth, and just like in the team race, the senior ended the day in the exact same place she started. The defending Big Ten medalist shot a 2-over 74 in the third round -- Northwestern's best individual score of the day -- and is at 9-over 225 (78-73-74) after 54 holes.
Michigan State's Rachel Meikle leads the tournament at 3-under 213.
A trio of Wildcats did make moves up the leaderboard on day two. Senior Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) made a small move, jumping up into the top 10 with a 3-over 75 that puts her in 10th place at 15-over 231 (78-78-75).
The biggest Wildcat mover on day two was Jennifer Hong (Windermere, Fla./The First Academy). In a tie for 24th after day one, the sophomore matched Alvarez's 3-over 75 to move up into a tie for 16th at 18-over 234 (82-77-75).
Northwestern's fourth score for the third round came from Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit). The junior rebounded from a tough day one with a 5-over 77 that helped her move seven spots up the leaderboard into a tie for 54th at 33-over 249 (82-90-77).
Also participating for the 'Cats on day two were senior Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Katie Trachok (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). Scholten shot a 7-over 79 on Saturday and is in a tie for 27th at 22-over 238 (80-79-79), while Trachok shot a 10-over 82 and is tied for 40th at 26-over 242 (77-83-82).
The final round of this year's Big Ten Championships will take place on Sunday, with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. CT.
