EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern held its annual Endowed Athletic Scholarship Luncheon Monday in Welsh-Ryan Arena, recognizing donors and 91 student-athletes.
An endowed scholarship is established with a minimum gift of at least $50,000. The interest from an endowment appreciates and is used to help fund scholarships for Northwestern's student-athletes.
Due to the success of Northwestern's Athletics Initiative, a fund-raising campaign with a goal of $15 million, Northwestern has nearly doubled its endowed scholarships in a single year and now has 91.
"This is always one of the highlights of our athletic year," said Mark Murphy, NU's director of athletics. "The generosity of our donors is assuring continued athletic and financial success for our athletics program."
Shon Morris, Northwestern's associate director of athletics for development, emceed the event, while Richard Dean and Ivan Tolic spoke on behalf of the respective donors and recipients.
