EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named junior Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) of wrestling and senior Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango) of women's golf its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Tamillow went 4-0 at 197 lbs. at the Big Ten Championships to capture his first career Big Ten title. Tamillow outscored his opponents 32-11 and cruised to a dominating 11-5 victory over Ohio State's J.D. Bergman in the finals.
Fellow Wildcats Jake Herbert and Ryan Lang brought home crowns to give Northwestern three Big Ten champions for the first time since 1931 and multiple champions for the first time since 1990. This is the third Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week honor of Tamillow's career.
Alvarez led the Wildcats to the 2007 Red Rocks Invitational title and earned individual co-medalist honors in the process. Alvarez delivered with a birdie on her final hole, which gave Northwestern a single-stroke victory over Washington State.
In her five tournaments with the 'Cats this year, she has finished in the top 15 of all five events, with three top-10 showings. This is the first Hilton Garden Inn Athlete of the Week honor of Alvarez's career.
