Wildcats Down Dartmouth 11-4 in Spring Break Finale

BRADENTON, Fla. - Northwestern defeated Dartmouth 11-4 to end its spring break trip in Bradenton, Fla., Sunday morning and ended its trip with an even 4-4 record. Freshman Jake Goebbert was 4-for-4 with two RBI and a walk in the game. Northwestern has won three games in a row for the first time this season. They are next in action when they host Michigan at Rocky Miller Park March 30 at 3 p.m. for the first of a four-game Big Ten series.
Left fielder Mike Kalina (Munster, Ind./Munster) gave Northwestern a 1-0 lead with an RBI double to the centerfield wall in the bottom of the second inning. It was Kalina's first double of the season. Designated hitter Max Mann (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) scored from first on the play. Mann walked in his at-bat.
Dartmouth answered with three runs on three hits, including a two-run triple in the top of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.
Northwestern answered with four unearned runs in the e bottom of the fourth inning to recapture the lead 5-4. Third baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) had an RBI single, along with first baseman Jake Goebbert's (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) bases-loaded two-RBI single.
Freshman Joe Muraski (Rothschild, Wis./D.C. Everest) took over mound duties from classmate Cole Livermore (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East). Livermore went five complete innings and gave up four runs. He struck out two in the process.
Owens was at it again in the bottom of the eighth inning, this time grounding a single to center to score Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) from second base. Owens advanced to second on the throw to the plate and stole third on an attempted pick off play at second base. Right fielder Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) followed with a fielder's choice RBI. After a single and hit batsman loaded the bases, second baseman Tommy Finn (Valparaiso, Ind./Andrean) delivered a two-RBI single to centerfield. Pinch-hitter Jim Grieco (Glenview, Ill./Loyola) followed with an RBI single to make the score 10-4 in favor of Northwestern. With runners on first and third, Kalina hit a sacrifice fly to end the scoring and put NU ahead 11-4. There were two Dartmouth pitching changes in the inning.
Muraski did the rest. After pitching a complete-game back on March 20 against Massachusetts (a 4-2 win), the Wisconsin native pitched the final four innings for his first collegiate save. For the week, he pitched 13 innings, gave up two runs and recorded a win and a save.
The win improves NU's record to 6-11 overall and they end their spring break trip with a 4-4 record.
