TUCSON, Ariz. -- Northwestern gained ground on day-one leader Nebraska, but couldn't overcome the Cornhuskers in the final round of the Mountain View Collegiate. The Wildcats, who started the day 10 strokes back of Nebraska, finished second, just four shots (294-288-288=870) behind the Huskers (287-285-294=866).
Interestingly, the Huskers' three-round team total (866) is a Mountain View record, edging the 870 the 'Cats established in 2005, when they won the event, along with this year's Wildcat team score.
Senior Liliana Alvarez (Durango, Mexico/American School of Durango), who equaled the tournament's single-round record score (68) on Saturday, carded a 1-under 71 on Sunday and finished in second place at 5-under (72-68-71=211). It is Alvarez's fourth top-10 showing this year. Since transferring from Tulane, she has placed in the top-15 of all six events played with the Wildcats.
Elaine Harris of Indiana posted a 7-under 209 (70-69-70) to win the individual title.
Senior Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood), who was 70th after the first two rounds, bounced back with a 3-under 69 and climbed to 41st place. She finished with a 7-over 223 (76-78-69).
Northwestern's third senior, Heather Scholten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), registered her best finish of the season, placing 14th with a 2-over 218 (71-74-73).
Juniors Justina Yu (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman) and Brittany Johnston (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) placed 47th and 63rd, respectively. Yu carded an 8-over 224 (77-72-75) while Johnston was 13-over (75-74-80).
Northwestern, which finished ahead of the three other Big Ten teams (Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin) in the 16-team Mountain View field, returns to action April 9 and 10 at the Indiana Invitational, which will be held at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind.
