EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) has been named Big Ten Player of the Week for her performance at last week's ITA National Indoor Championships. The honor is the third of Rose's career and the second for the Wildcats this season. The 'Cats are sixth in the latest ITA rankings.
"Georgia played very well in both singles and doubles last weekend," head coach Claire Pollard said. "Hopefully she and the whole team can carry the momentum from the Indoor Championships into our upcoming tests against Wisconsin and No. 1 Georgia Tech."
Rose posted a 2-1 singles record at the ITA Indoor Championships, helping the Wildcats to their first semifinals in nine appearances. Rose defeated two ranked opponents -- No. 35 Riza Zalameda of UCLA and Notre Dame's 41st-ranked Catrina Thompson.
In doubles, Rose, with partner Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), defeated two ranked opponents, including Miami's No. 1 pair, sixth-ranked Farah and Banada. Their last match against Notre Dame's Catrina and Christian Thompson, ranked 11th, was never finished with the doubles point clinched and the Wildcats leading 7-6.
Rose last won Big Ten Player of the Week on April 12, 2006. Teammate Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) won the first honor given out by the Big Ten this season.
The Wildcats head to Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers at noon Saturday. The sixth-ranked 'Cats will host the top-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at 3 p.m. Monday afternoon.
