EVANSTON, Ill. -- Anucha Browne-Sanders, one of the greatest women's basketball players in Northwestern history, will be featured Monday, February 5 on the Big Ten's Black History Month Website. She will be spotlighted as part of the Big Ten's celebration of Black History Month, during which a male and female African-American student-athlete from each member institution will be commemorated. The two honorees from Northwestern are Browne-Sanders and football standout Ron Burton.
Anucha Browne-Sanders garnered numerous honors and compiled staggering statistics, averaging 21 points and nearly nine rebounds a game, in her time as a Wildcat. Browne-Sanders was named a Kodak, Street & Smith and Women's Sports Federation All-American in 1985. She was a two-time Wade Trophy Player of the Year finalist and Naismith Trophy Player of the Year finalist. Browne-Sanders also set an NCAA record by scoring 30 or more points in six-straight games.
Browne-Sanders' achievements on the conference level are even more outstanding. She is still the only Wildcat to ever be named Big Ten Player of the Year in women's basketball, an honor she received twice in 1984 and 1985. Browne-Sanders was also named to the All-Big Ten team in three-consecutive seasons from 1983 to 1985 and is the Big Ten's third all-time leading scorer with 2,307 career points. She is a member of the Big Ten All-Decade team for 1980 and a member of the Big Ten Centennial team.
Anucha Browne-Sanders is a member of the Northwestern Hall of Fame. Her contributions to Northwestern's women's basketball program did not end when her playing time was up, as she is still very involved with the program.
