Three Wildcats Reach Finals

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Brandon Precin upset No. 1-seeded Nick Simmons to reach the finals of the 45th annual Midlands Championships on Sunday at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Joining the sophomore are seniors Dustin Fox and Mike Tamillow.
Precin advanced to the semifinals with a pin at 2:30 over Akif Eren of Purdue. Precin has two pins on the tournament, which puts him in a tie for second place for the most pins. His fasted coming in the quarters. Against Simmons, who was 24-1 all-time at the Midlands, Precin took a 1-0 decision, scoring in the third period with a roar from the crowd as he unseeded Simmons.
All-Americans Fox and Tamillow followed suit and both reached the final round for the second-consecutive year with ease, each gliding through the first three rounds while receiving a bye in the first. Tamillow then faced Central Michigan's Wynn Michalak in the semifinals, who is the third seed. Tamillow defeated him by an 8-6 decision and moves on to the finals against No. 1-seeded Josh Glenn from American University.
Fox is set to do battle with Mike Faust from Hawk WC. The senior beat out Iowa State's Dave Zabriskie 4-3 in the semifinals at 285 lbs. At the 2006 Midlands, Fox finished second, while Tamillow took the title.
Marty Gould took seventh place in the 149-lb. weight class after winning three matches in the wrestlebacks. Junior Dominic Marella takes on Trevor Stewart in the evening session for fifth place at 165 lbs. Marella fell in the semifinals to Mark Perry of Iowa in the championship round. Senior Nick Hayes also placed for the Wildcats at 174 lbs., as he fell to Lloyd Rogers of Tennessee-Chattanooga in the seventh place match, 9-8.
