Winter Sports Weekly Release No. 3

EVANSTON, Ill.-- Northwestern has named Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) of men's swimming and Meshia Reed (Country Club Hills, Ill./Stockbridge (Ga.)) of women's basketball as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.

Barbic won a pair of individual events at the Georgia Fall Invitational, swimming NCAA Championships `B' provisional qualifying standards to come out on top of the 50 freestyle (20.14) and the 100 freestyle (44.39). The senior also was part of three winning relay teams, swimming to first-place results in the 400 free relay, 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay. NU had NCAA `B' cuts in both the 400 free and 400 medley relays.

Reed twice set her career-high in points on the week with a 13-point performance against Wake Forest on Wednesday, then with a 20-point game Saturday against Boston College in the finals of the Mildred & Roger L. White Invitational. The freshman's 13 points came on 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc, while 15 of her 20 points against Boston College came via five treys (on five attempts). In the Invitationals' first-round game, Reed added seven points in the win over Central Michigan.
