Northwestern Takes Home Three Titles at Season Opener

YPSILANTI, Mich.-- In Northwestern's first event of the year, three wrestlers walked away with individual titles on Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Brandon Precin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) won the 125 lb. title with five-consecutive victories leading to his championship bout against Joel Trombly, who he crushed 10-1.
Dominic Marella (Roselle, Ill./Conant) breezed through the 165 lb. weight class to win the championship in a 3-2 decision over Luke Manuel. In the quarterfinal, he beat a 2007 NCAA Qualifier Justin Fraga from Purdue.
Northwestern's third championship went to Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./ Fenwick), who is picked by most preseason rankings as the third best wrestler in the 197 lb. weight class in the country. Tamillow finished the day 5-0 as an unattached wrestler and beat Joe Williams in the finals. Freshman John Schoen (Homer Glen, Ill./Marist) won three matches to start off his career, also unattached, before falling in the semifinals to Williams, who Tamillow then beat in the finals. Tamillow also defeated Carl Howe (Three Rivers, Mich./Three Rivers) in the second round of the bracket, 10-2.
Keith Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edward) came away with a third-place finish at the 141 lb. weight class, while Eric Metzler (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) finished off his opponent, Carson Beebe, with a dominating 16-1 victory in the fifth-place match of the 133 lb. weight class. Metzler won five matches on the day, losing just one. Wrestling unattached, freshman Mike Benefiel went 4-1 in the 174 lb. draw, as well.
