EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern enters Wednesday's game against Georgia Tech a little short handed. Five Wildcats have sustained injuries which will prevent them from seeing immediate game action. Starters Beth Marshall and Amy Jaeschke began the year with high expectations only to have injury wreck their immediate hopes. Marshall is sidelined with a left femoral fracture while Jaeschke broke her hand in the season-opener against Dayton after scoring 19 points in 25 minutes. Both are expected to be out 4-to-6 weeks. Additionally, Julie Bielawski and Lakhiyia Hicks are out with recurring injuries and Kristin Cartwright is expected to redshirt this season following ACL surgery over the summer.
Amidst the shake-up, several Wildcats have stepped up their game in an effort to carry the team. Amy's cousin, Ellen Jaeschke leads the team with 10.0 ppg, while Kaitlin McInerney has already recorded two double-doubles on the young season and is averaging a solid 9.5 ppg and 7.8 rpg. Senior Nadia Bibbs has also taken a leadership role on the court, contributing 9.5 points per contest and leading the squad with 12 assists per game.
"We have had a great week of practice, focusing on just getting better every day," head coach Beth Combs said. "It is a good test for us to step on the floor against Georgia Tech to see how we respond against an outstanding opponent."
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
Georgia Tech enters the contest against the 'Cats with an unblemished 3-0 mark on the season, having defeated Davidson, Tulane and most recently Temple. Senior Chioma Nnamaka is the Ramblin Wreck's leading scorer, pouring in 18.0 ppg. Fellow classmate Janie Mitchell leads the team in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and is second in scoring, averaging 16.3 ppg. The two are carrying the team, as they are averaging 35.1 minutes per outing.
The Series Against Georgia Tech
This is only the third time these two teams have met, with the all-time series notched at a win a piece. The last time the Wildcats faced Georgia Tech was in 2006 at Welsh-Ryan Arena when the Ramblin' Wreck pulled out an 82-68 victory. Four Wildcats--Kristin Cartwright (10), Kaitlin McInerney (14), A.J. Glasauer (13) and Sara Stutz (11)--all hit the double-figure plateau.
