EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Michael Thompson (Chicago, Ill./Lincoln Park) of men's basketball and Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) of volleyball as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Thompson had one of the best debuts of any Northwestern men's basketball player in recent memory by averaging 20 points per game in the Wildcats' first two games of the season. The freshman helped the Wildcats rally back from a 13-point second-half deficit to tie the game by scoring 16 points after the intermission against No. 20 Stanford. The 16 points were the most by an NU freshman in his debut since Vedran Vukusic in 2001. Thompson followed up the effort with a game-high 24 points Saturday at DePaul.
Hyser had a career-night Friday at Iowa, leading Northwestern to a 3-1 victory with a career-best 24 kills on a blistering .636 (24-3-33) hitting percentage. The junior middle blocker added an ace, one solo block and five block assists to record a career-best 28.5 points in the match, tying the team's best individual single-match point total of the season.
