Wildcats Conclude Season at NCAA Midwest Regional Championships

PEORIA, Ill. -- Juniors Allison King (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) and Marcellee Fullwood (Houston, Texas/Cypress Falls) led the way for Northwestern at the 6k NCAA Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday as the Wildcats improved on last year's finish, coming in 15th place.
The race marked the second-straight time that King has finished first on the team since returning from injury late in the season.
Paulina Garcia (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood), Marie Grabinski (Carmel, Ill./Carmel) and Britta Helwig (Chicago, Ill./Luther North) finished third, fourth and fifth for the team, respectively, while team co-captains Celia Franklin (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Carly Brown (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead) also ran in the race.
A trio of Big Ten teams finished ahead of the pack, with Minnesota taking the title, followed by Illinois and Iowa. Individually, Diane Nukuri of Iowa took home the crown, finishing nearly a half-minute ahead of the closest competition.
Saturday's race marked the end of the Wildcats' 2007 season, but the 'Cats look to continue their improvement in the 2008 season, as they graduate just four seniors and bring back some of their top runners from this year.
