EVANSTON, Ill. -
On a warm, sunny day at Rocky Miller Park, the Northwestern baseball team played its alumni to a festive 4-4 seven-inning tie Saturday afternoon.
One day after the annual golf outing, a total of 26 Wildcat alums participated in the contest against the current NU squad with numerous other family members and friends also in attendance. The festivities got underway with the home run derby which was won this year by recent graduate Mark Ori.
The alums got on the board first in the top of the opening inning as Steve Haake hit a two-run homer. The Wildcats got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as freshman Chris Lashmet led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Max Mann reached on an error.
The alumni team extended their lead to 3-1 in the ensuing half inning on a sacrifice fly by Mike Phelps and an RBI single by Pat McMahon. Northwestern rallied right back to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth as they took advantage of two walks, two errors and a hit batter.
Neither team was able to score over the final two innings as the game ended in a tie for the second consecutive year.
A pregame and postgame cookout was sponsored by Ruse's Meat Packing.
