EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern has named Adam Kadela (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) of football and Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) of women's soccer as its Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Kadela continued his outstanding senior season, racking up a game-high 12 tackles, which included a sack, in NU's 26-14 win over Eastern Michigan. The senior linebacker also intercepted a pass--the second of his career--and deflected another, which ended up being intercepted by teammate Deante Battle. Led by Kadela, Northwestern's defense totaled four takeaways, its highest total since recording four against UCLA in the 2005 Sun Bowl.
Johnston picked up her third shutout in four games in NU's 0-0 tie against Michigan on Friday. The senior made four saves and even survived a kick to the face and black eye to play the full 110 minutes to collect the shutout, her fourth overall and third in Big Ten Play. The game was Johnston's second straight double overtime shutout, and she played 48:05 in NU's 4-0 win over Michigan State to extend her shutout streak to 276:09. Johnston had to leave the game early in the second half after she was struck in her goal box for the second time in as many games.
