EVANSTON, Ill. -- Six of Northwestern's active squads currently are ranked in their sports' respective polls -- all of them in the top 10.

Two-time defending national champion women's lacrosse is ranked No. 1 in the first Lacrosse Magazine rankings of the year, and is expected to be in the same spot when the coaches poll is released in the coming weeks.

2006 NCAA runner-up softball will open the spring season ranked No. 4 in the USA Today/NFCA coaches poll, while women's fencing currently is No. 5 in its rankings.

Men's swimming moved up two spots to No. 6 in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, wrestling is No. 9 in the USA Today/InterMat/NWCA coaches poll and women's tennis is No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/Fila coaches poll.

Also of note is the women's swimming team, which received 30 votes in the latest CSCAA poll and is just two spots out of the top 25.

Last season, Northwestern matched its program-best finish with a 29th-place performance in the Sears Director's Cup. The Wildcats are off to another great start in 2006-07 after men's soccer's run to the NCAA quarterfinals.
