EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wildcats fell to Wisconsin, 74-50, Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Senior A.J. Glasauer (Freiburg, Germany/Theodor-Heuss Gymnasium) led Northwestern with 16 points while Julie Bielawski (Rogers, Ark./Rogers) and Sara Stutz (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) pulled down a team-high five rebounds each.
"The way A.J. finished was a good indicator of where we can go when we're ready," head coach Beth Combs said. "We are looking forward to getting back on the court Tuesday."
Northwestern jumped out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to treys by Kristin Cartwright (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Erin Dickerson (Chicago, Ill./Whitney Young).
But the Badgers had an answer, composing a 5-0 run to take a 12-10 lead with 13:12 remaining in the first half. A jumper by Sara Stutz cut the Wisconsin lead to one, 17-16, a few minutes later.
UW outscored the Wildcats, 12-5 over the next four minutes to push the lead to double-figures with 5:17 left.
A basket by Melissa Miller (Bloomington, Minn./The Breck School) with 13 seconds left cut the Wisconsin lead to 38-28 at the half. Cartwright led NU with seven points at the break.
The Badgers opened the second half on a 9-0 run, inflating the score to 47-28 by the 16-minute mark.
Northwestern's offense skidded in the second frame, mustering two buckets in the first 10 minutes until Beth Marshall (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) nailed a three-pointer with 9:49 remaining, pulling the score to 59-35. Wisconsin kept the 'Cats' offense at bay the rest of the game.
The Wildcats are next in action on Thursday when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue in a 6 p.m. (CT) contest.
