EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) has been named this week's Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. This is the fourth honor of his career and the second for the Wildcats this season.
Herbert, ranked No. 1 at 184 pounds, was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals. He went 5-0 as Northwestern finished eighth -- the first time it has placed at the National Duals in program history.
Herbert outscored opponents, 66-14, before scoring a pin on Iowa's Philip Keedy. Herbert scored three major decisions (12-0, 17-5, 16-4), a technical fall (21-5) and a pin during the National Duals.
It was the junior's first action on the mat since the All-Star Classic on Nov. 20, when he notched a major decision over Minnesota's Roger Kish. Fellow No. 1 Wildcat Ryan Lang (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward) was this year's first Big Ten Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 8. Herbert last received the honor on Jan. 25, 2006.
The eighth-ranked Wildcats have posted a 10-3 dual record and are led by top-ranked Herbert and Lang, along with second-ranked Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) at 197 lbs. and No. 4 Dustin Fox (Galion, Ohio/Galion) at heavyweight.
The 'Cats begin the Big Ten slate at 7 p.m., Friday, when they travel to No. 16 Illinois. The 'Cats welcome No. 5 to Rolling Meadows High School Sunday at 2 p.m.
