'Cats Finish Day One of National Collegiate Tennis Classic

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Northwestern's ninth-ranked women's tennis team concluded doubles action on Day One of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. The NCTC is an individual tournament that features several of the top programs in women's college tennis. The pair of sophomores Nazlie Ghazal (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) and Keri Robison (Decatur, Ill./Keystone National) won two matches on Friday to advance to the semifinals. Freshmen Suzie Matezenauer (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine) and Samantha Murray (Altrincham, England/Altrincham Grammar) advanced to the round of 16 in the singles draw.

Ghazal and Robison needed to overcome a 7-4 deficit to take a 9-7 win over Stanford's Deason and Hodzic. The pair fell behind 6-4 to USC's Fansler and Matias, but stormed back for an 8-6 win to advance to the semifinals.

Although only one team remains in the main draw, the other three Wildcat pairs are alive in the consolation draw. Alexis Conill (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) Matzenauer fell in their first round match to USC's DeVera and Fink, 8-6. They rebounded in the consolation draw with an 8-2 win over Texas' Olson and Corvoic.

The 'Cats' 30th-ranked team of Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Georgia Rose (Mettawa, Ill./North Shore Country Day) dropped their first match 8-5 to UCLA's Lumpkin and Lin, but they came back in the consolation bracket with an 8-2 win over Texas' Dizdar and Davison.

The freshman tandem of Lauren Lui (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Murray won their first match over Baylor's Cerna and Chemelarova, but needed to take a 12-10 tiebreaker to win 9-8. The pair dropped their quarterfinal match to UCLA's 17th-ranked pair and No. 2 seed Zalameda and Schnack, 8-6.

In singles, Matzenauer defeated USC's Judy DeVera in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 and knocked off Texas' Petra Dizdar in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16.

Murray, who had a bye in the first round, defeated Stanford's Leija Hodzic in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, to advance to the round of 16.

Lui topped Julie Smekodub of USC in two sets, 6-4, 6-2 before falling to Stanford's Whitney Deason, 6-4, 6-3.

Conill and Ghazal both fell in their first round singles matches while the rest of the 'Cats got byes in the first round.

Rose, Prousis and Robison all fell in their second round matches.

Action in the singles draw resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT. The doubles will continue at 5 p.m. CT.
