EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern baseball program participated in its annual alumni game Saturday afternoon at Rocky Miller Park. The alumni team and current 'Cats played to a 8-8 tie. Jason Krynski (2004) tied the score with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh. The game only lasted seven innings.
Ryan Myers (Lake Villa, Ill./Carmel) started for the current 'Cats and although the alumni registered two hits in the top of the first, they could not cash in. Todd Morgan (2002) singled in the top of the frame, but was left stranded.
Rain and lightning descended upon Rocky Miller Park in the bottom of the first and the teams headed for cover. After a 40-minute delay, the squads once again took the field. The 2007 Wildcats did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. Phil Rosengren (1999) started for the alumni and did not have an easy time. Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) hit a double to the left-center field gap that scored Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli). The 2006-07 Wildcats put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead.
The alumni scored their first run of the game in the top of the second on a ground ball out by Jon Mikrut (2005) that scored David Gresky (2004) from third.
The 2007 'Cats got on the board again in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Ownens laced a base hit into left-center, scoring two runs. Newman scored the third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Mule. This year's Wildcats led 7-1 through two innings.
Tommy Finn (Valparaiso, Ind./Andrean) lead off the bottom of the fourth with a single. He stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Joe Hietpas (2001). Hietpas redeemed himself by throwing out Newman, who tried to steal second after reaching base on a hit-by-pitch. The bottom of the fourth ended with the 2007 'Cats still leading 7-1.
The current squad added another run in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Jake Goebbert's (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) single scored Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) from second to extend the lead to 8-1. Luke Sundhein (2005) struck out Mike Kalina (Munster, Ind./Munster) to end the inning.
The alumni provided some excitement in the top of the sixth. With a runner on first, former catcher Ken Padgett (2003) launched a two-run home run over the left field fence to cut the current 'Cats' lead to 8-3. Pat Thompson (2002) added another two-run homer to make the score 8-5. Mark Ori (2005) flied out to end the threat.
The alumni rally continued in the top of the seventh when Jason Krynski (2004) launched a three-run home run over the left field wall to tie the socre at 8-8. The current squad did not score in the bottom of the seventh and the alumni game ended in an 8-8 tie.
For the alumni, Ken Padgett (2003) went 2-2 with a double and a home run.
David Gresky (2004) won the annual home run derby held before the game. He dethrones last year's champion, Matt Thompson.
