EVANSTON, ILL. -- Senior David Merkow (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead Union) of men's golf and sophomore Jeanette Lorme (Santa Clarita, Calif./Saugus) of women's soccer have been named this week's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Merkow. the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, finished in a tie for seventh at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational to help the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish. He completed 54 holes with a 5-over par total of 215, highlighted by 10 birdies in the event. Starting the final day in a tie for 13th, Merkow fired an even-par 70 on the difficult Olympia Fields Country Club to move up and earn his first top-10 finish of the fall.
Lorme scored the game-winning goal Friday in Northwestern's 1-0 win over Iowa. She netted a goal in the 54th minute before severe weather ended the contest with 18 minutes remaining. The tally was Lorme's second of the season. The win was head coach Stephanie Erickson's first in the Big Ten as a head coach.
