Cross Country Starts 2006 With Wildcat Open

EVANSTON, Ill. --Under a clear sky at the Northwestern lakefill, the Wildcats began their 2006 season Saturday morning with the Wildcat Open, cross country's version of an intrasquad scrimmage. Junior Celia Franklin (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) finished first overall.
The race gives head coach Amy Tush an idea of the adjustments her runners need to make before the 'Cats begin competition on Sept. 8.
"It's always a good start," head coach Amy Tush said about the Wildcat Open. "We start with something relaxed because the team got here a few days ago and this gives us a chance to learn about each other. I'm pleased with the effort the girls put forth today."
Franklin set the top time in the 5K race at 18:02. She was followed by sophomore Carly Brown (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead), who finished a close second at 18:39. Junior Marie Grabinski (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) finished third with a time of 18:56, just edging out Freshman Paulina Garcia (Streamwood, Ill./Streamwood) who took fourth place. Sophomore Hilary Forman (Prairie Village, Kan./Pembroke) rounded out the top five. Three freshmen finished in the top eight with Garcia in fourth, Britta Helwig (Chicago, Ill./Luther North) in sixth and Elizabeth Boyle (Elmhurst, Ill./Fenwick) in eighth.
The Wildcats begin competition at 5 p.m. Friday at the Chuck Carrol Invitational at DuPage River Park in Naperville, Ill.
