EVANSTON, Ill. -- Senior Alexis Prousis (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) will be playing in the U.S. Open, one of the world's most famous tennis tournaments. Prousis received a wild card entry into the Open for winning the NCAA Doubles Championship last spring with partner Cristelle Grier.
Although singles play is underway at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., the doubles schedule has not been announced. Prousis and her partner, Stanford senior Anne Yelsey, already know their first round opponent, the tandem of Amelie Mauresmo and Svetlana Kuznetsova. Mauresmo, from France, is the No. 1 overall seed in singles and is ranked 60th in the world in doubles. She won this year's Australian Open and Wimbledon Championships. Kuznetsova, from Russia, is the No. 6 seed in singles and ranked 36th in the world in doubles.
"We are very excited for Alexis," head coach Claire Pollard said before getting ready to head to New York City. "Playing against two of the best players in the world in the most famous tournament will be a fantastic highlight of her tennis career."
In 2005-06, Prousis compiled a 37-12 doubles record, including an 18-7 dual record and a perfect 10-0 mark in conference. She was All-American in doubles and earned All-Big Ten honors for the second straight year.
