Tyrell Sutton Named to Maxwell Award Watch List

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore running back Tyrell Sutton (Akron, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) is one of 60 players nationally who has been named to the preseason watch list for the 70th annual Maxwell Award for the Collegiate Player of the Year. He is one of 12 Big Ten standouts on the preseason list.
Players selected to the initial list have distinguished themselves as All-Conference or All-America selections from their respective universities in past years.
Sutton, picked as a freshman All-American by The Sporting News, Rivals.com, Scout.com and Collegefootballnews.com, was named the National Offensive Freshman of the Year by TSN, Scout.com and Collegefootballnews.com. He also was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a second-team All-Big Ten selection.
Sutton finished his record-setting freshman season with 1,474 rushing yards-the third-best single-season figure at Northwestern. He also totaled 1,870 all-purpose yards. He led Northwestern with 18 touchdowns, including 16 rushing TD's.
Twelve semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced in October 2006 and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November 2006. The winner will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show that will be broadcast on ESPN in December 2006.
