'Cats Announce Schedule for 2006-07 Season

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Following a stellar 2005-06 season, Northwestern's wrestling team has set its schedule for the 2006-07 season, head coach Tim Cysewski has announced. In addition to their perennially tough Big Ten schedule, the Wildcats begin the year at the Eastern Michigan Open, travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and have been invited to wrestle in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals for the second-straight season.
The 'Cats open the season in Ypsilanti, Mich., Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Eastern Michigan Open.
NU kicks off its dual schedule in the friendly confines of Welsh-Ryan Arena as it hosts the Northwestern duals on Sunday, Nov. 18.
The Wildcats then head to North Carolina to face some of the nation's top talent at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 18.
Northwestern returns home the next weekend to face in state foe Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2. A week later, the Wildcats host another Illinois opponent as they host Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10.
Northwestern then will head out to Reno, Nev., to participate in the Reno Tournament of Champions, where both Jake Herbert (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) look to repeat as champions.
The 'Cats return to Evanston to participate in one of college wrestling's most celebrated mid-season tournaments, the Midlands Wrestling Championships. More than 500 of the nation's top wrestlers are scheduled to compete in the tournament, Friday-Saturday, Dec. 29-30.
Following a two-week hiatus, the Wildcats are slated to compete in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals, Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 13-14. Northwestern has been invited to the duals -- which consists of the 16 best dual teams in the country -- for the second-straight year. This is the first time in program history the Wildcats have been invited to the duals in consecutive seasons.
The Wildcats then open up their Big Ten schedule, beginning with a road match at Illinois on Friday, Jan. 19.
NU faces another conference power one week later as they host the Iowa Hawkeyes at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 21.
After hosting the Wisconsin Badgers at home on Friday, Jan. 26, the Wildcats hit the road for the next two weeks to face Penn State, Ohio State and Indiana.
NU returns home for its last two regular-season matches. NU will have its annual Alumni Night when it hosts Purdue at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16.
Northwestern wraps up its regular-season slate by wrestling Michigan at home at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18.
The Wildcats look to improve upon their fifth-place Big Ten Championships this season when they travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the 2007 Big Ten Championships, Saturday-Sunday, March 3-4.
Northwestern concludes its season at the NCAA Championships, where it finished 13th this season. The Championships will be held in Auburn Hills, Mich., Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17.
