Wildcats Flame Out; Lose 23-5 to UIC

CHICAGO - Northwestern's midweek woes continued Tuesday night against Illinois-Chicago, falling 21-5 at Les Miller Field. UIC jumped out to an early 10-3 lead after two innings and never looked back, dropping NU to 19-28 on the season. First baseman Pat McMahon was 2-for-5 with three RBI, while shortstop Tommy Finn enjoyed his second three-hit game as a collegian.
The Flames jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Wildcat starter Dan Schwartz (New York, N.Y./Northern Valley Regional). Three singles, a stolen base and a two-run home run led to the four UIC runs.
Northwestern answered with three runs on three hits, including a two-out, two-RBI double by Pat McMahon (Mundelein, Ill./Carmel). Second baseman Jake Owens (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) drove in Max Mann (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) for NU's first run of the game.
UIC extended its lead to 10-3 with six runs in the bottom of the second inning. A two-run home run and bases-clearing double were the big hits of the inning.
After a 1-2-3 Wildcat third inning, the Flames scored a single run off Northwestern reliever Chris Davidson (Huntington Woods, Mich./Berkley) in the bottom of the third inning. UIC led 11-3 after three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, McMahon drove home his third run of the game with a groundout to second base. Shortstop Tommy Finn (Valparaiso, Ind./Andrean) hit a one-out single and went to second on Owens' second walk of the game. The two runners advanced 90-feet on a passed ball before McMahon's RBI groundout.
UIC scored another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a solo home run.
Freshman Tony Vercelli (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) hit his first collegiate home run to start off the top of the sixth inning. Vercelli's round-tripper was a solo shot to left field.
Freshman Matt Havey (Wilmette, Ill./Loyola) took over on the mound to start the sixth inning. Havey replaced Davidson who pitched three complete innings. He gave up two runs on three hits.
Havey gave up one run on a leadoff single and a sacrifice fly in his only inning of work. The score after six complete innings was UIC 15, Northwestern 5.
Left-hander Mike Folan (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator) started on the hill in the bottom of the seventh inning. A one-out single and a pair of walks loaded the bases before a grand slam home run made the score 17-5 UIC.
Sophomore Brian Morgan (Eden Prarie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) pitched the bottom of the eight for NU. He gave up six runs seven hits, including a three-run home run.
NU is next in action when they host Michigan State at Rocky Miller Park this weekend in a four-game Big Ten series. The Wildcats are fighting for a regular-season title and are tied with Michigan atop the conference standings with a 16-8 record. Game one against Michigan State is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.
