EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's baseball team followed the left arm of junior Dan Brauer to a 1-0 win over Minnesota in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Rocky Miller Park. Brauer struck out 10 needing only a first-inning RBI single by right fielder Antonio Mule to notch his fifth win of the season.
In a classic pitcher's dual, the Wildcats scored the only run of the game in the top of the first inning. Designated hitter Aaron Newman (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) scored when Antonio Mule (Lodi, N.J./Lodi) lined a sharp single down the right field line. Newman was hit by a pitch to reach first and stole second before moving to third on a fly ball to right field.
After facing six hitters in the top of the first inning, Brauer settled down and retired 12 of the next 13 hitters he faced. The one runner who did reach base actually struck out, but the pitch hit the dirt and deflected into the Gopher dugout.
Minnesota did load the bases in the sixth inning, but a Brauer strikeout and an infield pop out ended the threat.
Brauer, the Big Ten's leading strikeout pitcher entering the game, struck out a season-high 10 Gophers in the game. Five of his 10 punch-outs went down looking. He now has 75 Ks in 70.2 innings pitched.
Gopher hurler Dustin Brabender was equally as impressive. After giving up a run in the first, Brabender retired 15 of the next 17 Wildcats to end the game. NU had just three hits in the game. Minnesota reliever Andy Peters retired the final two outs of the game.
