EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern University has announced baseball's Dan Brauer (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and lacrosse's Kristen Kjellman (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) have been named Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Brauer, a junior, earns his second-consecutive Athlete of the Week honor as he followed up his Big Ten Pitcher of the Week performance against Minnesota last week with Northwestern's first no-hitter since 1999 in a 7-0 win over Michigan State. MSU was second in the Big Ten with a .270 team batting average. Brauer allowed only two runners to reach base, one of which struck out but made it safely to first on a passed ball by the catcher. He struck out eight and walked one to extend his scoreless inning streak to 14 innings. He threw 99 pitches (69 strikes) in his sixth complete game of the season and lowered his conference ERA to 2.17. This is his eighth-career AOW selection.
Kjellman, a junior, garners the accolade after she tallied six points with four goals and two assists to lead the Wildcats to a convincing win over Stanford on Sunday in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship. It marked Kjellman's 15th game this year with a hat trick or better as the Wildcats extended their home winning streak to 19 games. Kjellman leads the team with 65 goals on the year and ranks fourth nationally with 3.6 goals per game. This marks her fifth-career Athlete of the Week selection.
