EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern men's golfer Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) and women's golfer Alice Kim (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) have been named Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week, the University announced Monday.
Wilson, who was coming off a second-place finish at last week's Fossum Invitational, saved his best golf of the year for the Big Ten Championships and became NU's first Big Ten champion since Luke Donald won the league title in 2001. Wilson carded four rounds of par (71) or better -- 70, 70, 71 and an incredible 69 in rainy and windy conditions -- to help the Wildcats come from behind and claim the team title. Wilson started the final round five strokes back of Michigan State's Ryan Brehm, who was the tourney leader for the first three rounds. He is the third Wildcat to win a tournament this year. This is his second career AOW honor.
Powered by a career-best 4-under 68 in the opening round, Alice Kim jumped out in front as the Big Ten Championships leader and then held off a number of golfers to win her first collegiate event by one stroke. Kim set the Big Ten record for a 36-hole score (140) and then equaled the Big Ten mark for 54 holes with a 214 (68-72-74). She finished with a 3-over 291 as the final round was played in rainy, windy conditions. The accolade is the third of Kim's career.
