WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern's 23rd-ranked Wildcats posted one of Sunday's best rounds -- an 8-over 296 -- but could not make up any ground in the team standings and finished the Boilermaker Invitational in sixth place.
Indiana and Purdue, which started the day in first and second place, finished the tournament in the same place. The Hoosiers were led by Jorge Campillo, who coasted to the individual title with an eight-stroke win (4-under 212) over a trio of second-place finishers.
Northwestern's David Merkow carded a 1-under 71 and climbed to ninth place for his third top-10 finish of the year. Merkow was 6-over (75-76-71=222) for the 54 holes.
Junior Chris Wilson (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) also finished under par on Sunday with a 1-under 71. He placed 11th with a 7-over 223 (74-78-71).
Sophomores Kyle Moore (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) and Dan Doyle (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) finished 33rd and 43rd, respectively. Moore had a 16-over 232 (79-76-77) and Doyle totaled an 18-over 234 (78-78-78).
Senior Scott Weber (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), who was replacing Masters' participant Dillon Dougherty in the lineup, registered a 5-over 77 on Sunday and placed 56th with a 24-over 240 (83-80-77).
While the Hoosiers and Boilermakers finished ahead of the Wildcats, NU did place in front of three other Big Ten schools -- Wisconsin, Michigan and 16th-ranked Minnesota.
Northwestern is back in action next weekend at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio.
