IOWA CITY, Iowa - After late-inning heroics earned Northwestern's baseball team a 9-8 win Saturday night, Iowa took no chances in a game one of two 16-2 route. The Hawkeyes scored runs in every inning, including a seven-spot in the first on its way to dropping the Wildcats to 16-24 overall, 13-6 in the Big Ten.
Iowa scored runs in every inning as Wildcat starter George Kontos (Lincolnwood, Ill./Niles West) lasted just one inning. He gave up seven runs (all earned) on seven hits.
Four NU relievers did not fare much better, giving up nine runs on 13 hits.
Kontos took the loss, falling to 2-7 on the year, 2-2 in the Big Ten.
Offensively for NU, outfielder Max Mann (Los Angeles, Calif./Brentwood) was 1-for-3 with an RBI and freshman Tony Vercelli (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) recorded an RBI on a fielder's choice groundout. Shortstop Tommy Finn (Valparaiso, Ind./Andrean) and third baseman Caleb Fields (Oak Park, Ill./Fenwick) were each 2-for-3 in the game.
NU and Iowa finish the rescheduled doubleheader immediately following this game. It will be a nine-inning contest.
